Workers at Volkswagen’s plant in Brussels went on strike on Monday [again] to protest against possible cost-cutting measures that unions and management are currently negotiating, union officials were reported to have said.

Reuters noted that workers at the plant went on strike for seven weeks from November over Volkswagen’s plans to stop making its top-selling Golf model at the plant and slash the workforce to 1,500 from more than 5,000.
They only returned to work at the start of January after VW offered to produce over 100,000 Audi A1 cars per year at the factory from 2009, securing 3,000 jobs, the report added.
According to Reuters, Volkswagen previously said it wanted to reduce costs at the plant and implement longer working hours. Unions and management are currently discussing a possible agreement.
“We are going to sign. There is no other solution,” Stefaan Van Bokstaele, a union official who argued that a refusal to reach a deal could lead the company’s management to close the plant, told the news agency.
