Following features which looked at what’s ahead for Daihatsu and Lexus, now comes a deep dive into plans for future Toyota cars.

This first instalment concentrates on the Kei, A, B and C segments and includes hybrids, PHEVs and EVs. After this, vehicles in the D, E and F segments will be looked at, to be followed by SUVs, crossovers, minivans/MPVs, pick-ups and sports cars.

Kei

The Toyota brand is not a major one in Japan’s Kei segment, which is for 660cc mini-vehicles. In fact, it once had no presence there. Now, there are four models, each being a Daihatsu that has been lightly modified. The oldest is the Pixis Space. Daihatsu began supplying a version of its Move Conte to Toyota for its Corolla and Netz sales channels in Japan from September 2011. The next Pixis Space should be released in Japan during the first half of 2018.

Daihatsu has supplied the Pixis Epoch, a rebadging of its e:S Mira, to Toyota for one of its Japanese market sales channels since May 2012. It uses the same DNGA platform as all four Pixis models. The second generation Pixis Epoch should be released during the second half of 2018.

The Pixis Joy is another small car supplied to Toyota for several of its home market dealer networks by Daihatsu. It went on sale in Japan in August 2016 and is close in appearance to the Daihatsu Cast: these models come down the same line at Daihatsu’s Oita (Nakatsu) plant. A facelifted model is due in 2018 and the second generation Pixis Joy should appear in 2020.

Then fourth Kei model supplied by Daihatsu is the Pixis Mega. This tiny minivan, a version of the Daihatsu Wake, went on sale in Japan in July 2015. The second generation model is expected to become available in 2019.

A segment

The second generation of Toyota Motor Europe’s Aygo A segment hatchback had its world premiere at the Geneva motor show in March 2014. Only the four-door body style was shown. This little car is built on the same production line as the Peugeot 108 and second generation Citroen C1. All three models use an updated version of the first generation models’ Toyota-based platform. While they share doors and the windscreen, the Toyota is far more distinctive than the Groupe PSA cars due to an X-graphic across its front end.

All three cars have a standard Toyota-developed 68PS 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, but the PSA twins are also available with an 82PS 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. Unlike the previous models, none is available with a diesel.

Production commenced in May 2014 and should continue until 2023 after a facelift in 2018. The Aygo 3 and its PSA brothers will be based upon a fresh architecture. There may also be an electric version of the next Aygo and PSA might add an Opel/Vauxhall model to the project.

A small car would be made at Daihatsu’s then forthcoming second Indonesian plant, the company announced in May 2011, as ground was broken for the facility at Karawang Timur.

The Suryacipta factory, which is 60km east of Jakarta, would help to lift local production capacity from 330,000upa to over 500,000upa. It was due to build its first vehicles in late 2012 but the project was delayed. Production of 50,000 cars was originally planned for 2013, moving to 100,000upa via two shifts in 2014. The car in question, the Daihatsu Ayla, was launched alongside its twin, the Toyota Agya, at the Jakarta motor show in September 2012.

Both the Agya and Ayla are small five-door hatchbacks and are based on the Daihatsu Mira e:S which is sold mainly in Japan. They are rivals for the Mitsubishi Mirage. The engine is the 1KR 998cc petrol unit.

Ayla and Agya production got underway in Indonesia in August 2013. Sales commenced the following month. In February 2014, Toyota and Daihatsu announced that an Agya-based car would soon be announced; a special model for export to The Philippines. This car is sold in that market as the Toyota Wigo. The next generation Agya and Wigo, as well as the Ayla successor, are due for release in 2019, and all will again be based on DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture).

The Passo is yet another model in the A segment. It was revealed in Japan in April 2016. Like the previous generation, this small five-door hatchback is supplied to TMC by Daihatsu. All versions at launch in Japan were powered by the 1KR-FE 1.0-litre petrol engine. Both front- and all-wheel drive variants are available.

Either 3,650 or 3,660mm long depending on model grade, the Passo is 1,665mm wide, 1,525mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,490 mm. The Daihatsu Boon is closely related to the Passo and the cars are built on the same production line. They were also the first two models for DNGA. If a replacement model appears, this will be in 2022, after a facelift for the current model in 2020. TMC is said to be looking at reducing its home market model range – some reports even claim it may halve its line-up by 2025 – so the Passo might be one of the models in question.

B segment

The third generation Vitz went on sale in Japan in December 2010. There, 1.0-, 1.3- and 1.5-litre gasoline engines are offered and all-wheel drive is also available, while a Hybrid was added in January 2017.

The Yaris-badged car had its global premiere at the Melbourne motor show in July 2011, with Toyota Motor Europe’s three- and five-door cars having their debuts at the Frankfurt motor show two months later. Toyota began start selling the car in North America as a 2012 model year vehicle from October 2011. The old-shape sedan remained on sale there for a time, though only for fleet buyers.

Initially, the Vitz was built in Japan only, with Yaris build in France added from July 2011. The other global plants which continued to make the second generation Yaris steadily switched over to the newer model. Toyota opened its Ohira plant in rural Japan in February 2011, with the Vitz/Yaris the first model to be built there.

In June 2012, Toyota stated that the Yaris for North America would be supplied from France, as of mid-2013. Previously, the car for that region came from Japan. Production of cars for the US, Canada and Puerto Rico then commenced in May 2013.

The Yaris for China, which entered production in August 2013, premiered at the Shanghai motor show in April 2013. It is manufactured by the Guangzhou Auto (GAC) and Toyota joint venture at the Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (GTMC) plant. A sedan, the Yaris L, was added in October 2016.

North America’s 2014 model year Yaris gained daytime running lights but was otherwise carried over. The 2015MY car had a facelift. This was previewed by a revised Vitz which went on sale in Japan in April 2014 and the facelifted Yaris announced by TME in May 2014.

Toyota Motor Thailand (TMT) added production of its Eco Yaris at its Gateway complex’s newest Chachoengsao plant in October 2013.

With Scion division being would up at the end of North America’s 2016 model year, the former iA changed names and brands and became the Toyota Yaris iA for the 2017 model year. The iA is a sedan and Toyota Motor Sales USA calls the hatchback a ‘Liftback’.

TMC caused a surprise when in January 2017 it announced another facelift for the Vitz and not the new model which had been expected. The equivalent facelift for the Yaris as well as a 210bhp three-door derivative inspired by the Yaris rally car debuted at the Geneva motor show in March 2017. This is the Yaris GRMN (see image).

The facelifted Yaris is new for North America’s 2018 model year, debuting at the New York auto show in April 2017, a month after the car’s original show premiere at Geneva.

Toyota revealed a prototype of the Yaris HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive) at the Geneva motor show in March 2011. The production car followed at the Geneva show in March 2011, with build in France commencing the following month.

The Yaris Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in combination with one electric motor. The only transmission is a CVT.

A facelifted model was announced by TME in May 2014. It went on sale across Europe two months later. The next generation Vitz Hybrid for Japan should be released in mid-2018, to be followed by a new Yaris Hybrid towards the end of 2018 or possibly into 2019.

The fourth generation Vitz/Yaris, coded 865A, is expected to appear first in Japan in mid-2018. Build of the vehicle should be at the same locations as the current generation of the model – i.e. France, Thailand, Japan and China. The car will use the B segment version of the TNGA global architecture.

Why TMC has allowed the third generation model to have such a long life-cycle compared to previous cars is a mystery.

The company will not offer the next Yaris with a diesel engine as the company has decided that it wants to phase out diesels for its passenger vehicles.

Toyota Motor Europe will likely not introduce the next Yaris until 2019, while Toyota Motor Sales USA will probably replace its Yaris iA for the 2019 or 2020 model years.

The Yaris ATIV is a separate model. This is a small sedan which is assembled by TMT (Toyota Motor Thailand) from imported kits. These are sent from Japan. The car is based on the Yaris/Vitz but unlike that model, which has a 1.5-litre engine in the Thai market, the Yaris ATIV has a 1.2-litre engine.

TMT was late to the sedan segment of the Thai government’s Eco Car 1 programme, with rival models from Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Suzuki already available before the Yaris ATIV. Including hatchbacks, cars which qualify for Eco Car 1 have risen from a five per cent share of the Thai market to 15 per cent, and TMT believes they could yet reach 25 per cent. Such models’ petrol engines must have a maximum capacity of 1,300cc or 1,500cc for a diesel engine. Also, average economy must be at least 54.7 mpg (4.3l/100 km) and carbon-dioxide emissions should be below 100g/km.

The Yaris ATIV went on sale in August. TMT stated at that time that it estimated monthly sales would be 4,700 cars with a further 3,000 to be exported.

In September came news from Japan stating that Toyota’s Brazilian operations will assemble the Yaris ATIV from mid-2018. This will be at Sorocaba, the same plant which makes the Etios. The Corolla is built at a factory in Sao Paulo. 

The Vios is a small four-door sedan which had its world premiere at the Bangkok motor show in March 2013. Toyota Motor Thailand’s Gateway No.1 was the first plant in the world to manufacture this car. Toyota quotes the car’s dimensions as follows: 4,410mm × 1,700mm × 1,475mm (L x W x H).

The Chinese market debut for the Vios took place at the Shanghai motor show in April 2013. The production model premiered at the November 2013’s Guangzhou motor show having entered production locally earlier that month. A Vios hatchback premiered at the Guangzhou motor show in November 2016. This is built by the FAW joint venture and sold as the Toyota Vios 3.

Vios assembly commenced at the Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) Santa Rosa plant in July 2013. TMP was the first to build left-hand drive versions of the new Vios.

Export of the Vios from PT. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) started in December 2013 to Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, with shipments to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon, and Yemen added from March 2014.

A facelifted Vios was announced in January 2017. The Vios replacement should begin to be rolled out worldwide from 2019. Its basis will most likely be TNGA-B, the same architecture which will be used for the Vitz, Yaris and other global B segment models.

The Etios is a small sedan that is sold mainly in India, while the Etios Liva is the five-door hatchback version (known in Indonesia as the Etios Valco). Toyota Kirloskar (TKML), Toyota’s Indian joint venture, announced plans in April 2009 to begin building a small car at its Bidadi plant near Bangalore during 2010.

The Etios was launched by Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private, Ltd. (TKM) in December 2010 as a four-door sedan. The Etios Liva reached production in June 2011. A concept version of the five-door, called Etios, had premiered at the New Delhi motor show in January 2010.

TKM is owned 89% by the Japanese manufacturer and 11% by India’s Kirloskar Group.

The Bangalore-built car’s dimensions are stated as follows: length, 4,265mm; width: 1,695mm; height: 1,510mm.

In October 2011, TKML stated that it would begin exporting the Etios and Liva to South Africa from March 2012. Cars did indeed go on sale in ZA that month.

In September 2011 came an announcement that Daihatsu, Toyota and their local partner, PT Astra, would erect a second plant at Karawang (east of Jakarta) to build two Etios-based models, one each for the Daihatsu and Toyota brands. Production started in late 2012. The Etios Valco went on sale locally in March 2013.

The model has also been made in Brazil since September 2012. This follows the July 2010 announcement by Toyota do Brasil (TDB) that it would erect a 70,000upa plant at Sorocaba in the state of São Paulo to build a ‘compact car’. The four- and five-door cars premiered at the Sao Paulo motor show in October 2012. This plant has since been expanded and now has a capacity of 100,000 vehicles per annum.

While it had been said that the Etios would be the first car on a new ‘EFC’ platform, this turned out to be a development of the existing NBC architecture.

TKML announced a facelifted Etios and Liva range in March 2013. An additional model, the Etios Cross, went on sale in India during May 2014. This followed the world premiere of a prototype at February 2014’s Delhi motor show. There was a further styling refresh for India’s Etios and Liva in October 2014. Brazil’s Etios had a facelift in August 2016.

Toyota is said to be planning to manufacture a new ‘family car’ for India. This it will market as the country’s safest model in its segment, and it would also be highly fuel efficient. The company sees an opportunity for such a model and it is said to be investigating how it can bring down costs to make it competitive with the top sellers marketed by Maruti Suzuki. Daihatsu is said to be developing the model in partnership with TMC and TKML. It is believed that this car will serve as the Etios successor. It should be introduced in 2019.

Toyota revealed a concept version of the Prius c, a small gasoline-electric hybrid, at the Detroit auto show in January 2011. The production model had its global debut at the Tokyo motor show in November 2011, badged as the Toyota Aqua. It went on sale there with that badging the following month. North America’s Prius c had its premiere at the Detroit auto show in January 2012.

A facelifted Prius c had its world premiere at the LA auto show in November 2014. This was North America’s 2015 model year car. A facelifted Aqua for Japan went on sale there in December 2014. The Prius c gained some new safety equipment for North America’s 2016 model year. There was a second facelift for the 2017 model year.

Toyota announced another facelift for the Japanese market Aqua in June 2017. And a crossover variant was added at the same time. This likely also means that the Aqua and Prius c will have an extended lifecycle, probably being built into 2019 now, instead of 2018. Their replacements will use TNGA-B.

The Porte is another small car, and it is sold mostly in Japan. It is the second generation model and went on sale there, as did its twin, the Toyota Spade, in July 2012 (they are retailed through different dealership networks).

Like the first generation model, the Porte is a three-door city car. One unusual touch is a sliding passenger door which can be opened and closed by buttons on the dashboard or keyfob. The driver’s door is conventionally hinged. The only gearbox is a CVT, and there are two engines: Toyota’s 1.3-litre (1NR-FE) or an improved 1.5-litre (1NZ-FE).

While the first generation Porte was built at Daihatsu’s Kyoto plant, the current model, as well as the Spade, are made at Kanto Auto Works’ Higashi-Fuji plant in Shizuoka Prefecture. The shift was aimed at increasing the efficiency of the Higashi-Fuji plant. Kanto Auto merged with two other Toyota group firms (Central Motor Company and Toyota Motor Tohoku Corporation) into Toyota Motor East Japan Inc. on 1 July 2012. This was done as part of a plan for the development and production of compact vehicles.

The Porte and Spade will likely be facelifted in early 2018 and then discontinued during the third quarter of 2019.

C segment

The current Corolla has around another 18 months of production remaining in Japan and North America. In Toyota’s home market, where this model was released in May 2012, it is sold as a sedan (Corolla Axio) wagon (Corolla Fielder) and five-door hatchback (Auris). The eleventh generation Corolla series brought with it a new platform.

The Corolla Axio & Fielder for the Japanese market are built at the Miyagi plant, while the Auris is made at Takaoka.

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) stated in November 2011 that it would invest more than GBP100m to build the next ‘C segment hatchbacks’ at its plant in the English Midlands. In May 2012, TME confirmed that the Auris model name would be used again. The current Auris, codenamed 130A, was announced by Toyota in Japan and Toyota Motor Europe on the same day in August 2012. The car had its motor show debut in Paris in September 2012.

Aside from minor styling details, the main differences between the UK- and Japan-built five-door hatchbacks are the engines, though the car for Japan is also offered with all-wheel drive.

In Japan, Toyota’s 1NZ-FE 1.5-litre engine in combination with front-wheel drive and a CVT is the standard drivetrain. All-wheel drive is optional. Buyers may also pay extra for versions powered by the 2ZR-FAE 1.8-litre engine. This brings with it a six-speed manual gearbox but AWD is not available.

Production of the five-door Auris started at the Burnaston plant in England in November 2012, with wagon production added in June 2013.

The replacement for the Corolla sedan, coded 466A, for European markets has been made in Turkey since July 2013 (mostly for Eastern Europe). Whereas prior to this, the TMMT (Sakarya/Adapazari) plant also manufactured the first generation Auris hatchback, all build of second generation five-door cars for TME markets comes from Burnaston.

Toyota Motor Sales USA revealed a preview of its then future Corolla at the Detroit auto show in January 2013, in the form of the Corolla Furia concept. The production model was then revealed in June 2013. The car has the same 2,700mm wheelbase as the Furia concept and different styling to Japan’s Corolla sedan. The car is also almost four inches longer than the 2013MY Corolla.

With the former Scion iM having been discontinued at the end of North America’s 2016 model year, the car changed brands and names for the 2017 model year, becoming the Toyota Corolla iM.

In Malaysia and some other markets, the Corolla sedan is badged ‘Corolla Altis‘.

China’s FAW Toyota joint venture revealed its Corolla sedan at the Beijing motor show in April 2014, alongside a restyled version, the Toyota Levin. The second of these is manufactured by GAC Toyota at the Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co., Ltd. (GTMC) plant. The Levin went on sale in China in July 2014. Hybrid versions of both were launched during the second half of 2015.

A facelifted Auris range had its world premiere at the Geneva motor show in March 2015. Japan’s equivalent Corolla update went on sale there during the following month.

Toyota Motor Europe announced initial details of the second generation Auris Hybrid in August 2012. The car, which is built in England, was then revealed a month later at the Paris motor show. Unlike the first generation car, the current one is also available as a wagon (‘Touring Sports’). Build of the five-door got underway in November 2012, but wagon production did not start until mid-2013.

The Auris is powered by a 1.8-litre petrol engine as well as an electric motor. Engines are sourced from a Deeside plant in Flintshire. This facility in the north of Wales was the first Toyota powertrain plant outside Japan to manufacture hybrid engines. The Hybrid goes down the same line as other Auris variants at the TMUK plant at Burnaston in the English Midlands. The larger Avensis sedan and wagon come off the same line.

Toyota announced the Corolla Hybrid for the Japanese market in August 2013. As well as different styling to the Auris, the engine has a smaller capacity. The 1,496cc petrol engine is codenamed 1NZ-FXE. It produces 54kW (74PS), while the electric motor’s output is quoted as 45kW (61PS). Combined output is 73kW (100PS), according to Toyota’s calculations.

The Corolla Axio Hybrid (sedan) and Corolla Fielder Hybrid (wagon) are retailed in Japan through Toyota’s ‘Corolla’ dealer network.

A Corolla (sedan) Hybrid for the Chinese market was announced in February 2015 as was the closely related Toyota Levin Hybrid. FAW Toyota builds the Corolla HEV, while Guangzhou Toyota manufactures the Levin HEV. The cars premiered at November 2015’s Guangzhou motor show and went on sale soon after.

A facelifted Auris Hybrid had its world premiere at the Geneva motor show in March 2015. The first customer deliveries did not take place, however, for a further six months.

The twelfth generation Corolla has 150B as its model code. Due for release from 2018, it will use the K version of TNGA, Toyota’s low-cost global architecture. In Japan, the next Corolla should be sold as a sedan and a wagon, and in Europe, the Auris will almost certainly be a five-door hatchback and wagon range, with the Corolla sedan available in some countries too. TKML (Toyota Kirloskar) is expected to also manufacture the next generation Corolla Hybrid at its Bidadi plant in the Indian state of Karnataka.

Toyota Motor Europe told the media in March 2017 that it would be spending GBP240m to upgrade the Burnaston plant in England for the manufacture of TNGA vehicles. The next Auris is expected to be the main product to be made there.

Donald Trump tweeted in January 2017: “Toyota Motor said will build a new plant in Baja, Mexico, to build Corolla cars for U.S. NO WAY! Build plant in U.S. or pay big border tax.”

Seven months later TMC announced that it had changed its plans and that it would instead manufacture the Tacoma pick-up at the Mexican factory. Also, it would be having a new US plant erected at a yet to be named site. This will build not just the Corolla but also a Mazda SUV. As part of this collaboration, TMC and Mazda Motor agreed a share swap, and their US plant will be co-owned and have an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles. In return for a 5% holding in Mazda, TMC gave its Hiroshima-based rival and partner a 0.25% holding in itself.

The Corolla 12 should have a six to seven year life cycle, which would mean a facelift in 2021.

Toyota announced plans for the future Corolla PHEV and Levin PHEV at the Beijing motor show in April 2016. These plug-in hybrids will be built and sold in the Chinese market from 2018. The PHEV variants will likely be new generation (new shape) models. FAW Toyota will build the Corolla PHEV, while Guangzhou Toyota will manufacture the Levin PHEV.

The Allion and Premio are twins which are sold in Japan. These now long-lived replacements for the four-door sedans of the same names went on sale in Japan, their main market, in June 2007. The styling of each differs slightly and the Premio is sold exclusively through Toyopet dealers, while Toyota dealers sell the Allion. As these cars are now so overdue for replacement, it seems likely that they will be part of Toyota’s plans to reduce its domestic market line-up. They will probably be discontinued by the end of 2017.

The fourth generation Prius was previewed by the Toyota NS4 concept, a five-door hatchback with a 2.0-litre + electric motor hybrid powertrain that premiered at the Detroit auto show in January 2012.

The Prius 4 (model code: 690A) was the first vehicle to be based upon TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). Production commenced in December 2015, following the car’s media and then public debuts taking place three months previously. This was at an event in the US, followed a few days later by a showing at the Frankfurt IAA.

The car went on sale first in Japan. This was in December 2015. The Prius is 60 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 20 mm lower than the model it replaced. The length is 4,540mm. Power comes from a 1,797cc petrol engine (2ZR-FXE) and a 53kW battery pack.

Both nickel-metal hydride and lithium ion battery options are offered, as is all-wheel drive. The lithium ion cells weigh less overall than the nickel-metal hydride batteries so Toyota fits the li-ion pack to higher spec cars to offset the weight of their additional standard equipment.

Tsutsumi was the first plant to build the current Prius, with production at Takaoka added from September 2016. Toyota said at the time of the Prius’ launch in Japan that it aims to build 300,000-350,000 units/annum of the new model. A facelift should happen in late 2018.

The fifth generation Prius is due to appear in late 2021, with the PHEV variant to follow in 2022. Both should use an evolution of TNGA, the lightweight platform used for the fourth generation models.

The Prius v, a rival for the Ford C-MAX Hybrid, went on sale there in the US and Canada in November 2011 for the 2012 model year. This model, which had its global debut at the Detroit auto show in January 2011, is more or less a taller, longer derivative of the former Prius.

A seven-seat variant for European markets, which is badged ‘Prius+‘, debuted at the Geneva motor show in March 2011. The Prius a (Prius Alpha) was launched in Japan in May 2011. There, both five- and seven-seater versions are available.

North America’s Prius v is a five-seater only. While the Prius v for that region has a nickel-metal hydride battery located under its rear seat, the seven-seater Prius+ for Europe has a lithium ion battery.

Both five- and seven-seater versions of the Prius a are available in Japan. There is also a version for Daihatsu, the Mebius.

Toyota Motor Europe announced a minor facelift for the Prius+ in October 2014. This went on sale in Japan during the following month and was North America’s 2015MY Prius v. A second generation model is due for release in 2018.

As for the current Prius plug-in hybrid, this entered production in late 2016. It was revealed at the New York auto show in March 2016. New for North America’s 2017 model year, the model name in that region is Prius Prime but in other markets, it is called Prius PHV (Japan), Prius PHEV, Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Prius Plug-In or Prius Rechargeable.

The car is 2.4 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and about an inch lower than its predecessor. It also has quite different styling at its front and rear ends compared to the standard Prius. In Japan and Europe, some versions have solar panels on the roof. These, Toyota claims, can increase the car’s range by up to 10%. The panels, which are laid on reinforced glass sheeting, prevent the Prius Prime from passing the USA’s rollover laws, so the solar roof isn’t available in that market. The car’s chief engineer told the media at the car’s home market preview in June 2016 that Toyota does not have the technology to laminate the photovoltaic cells in a resin which won’t shatter if the car rolls. However, TMC is working on a solution. Panasonic is the supplier of the solar roof.

TMC is hoping to sell 60,000 units a year of the plug-in Prius. Of that total, roughly half should be in Japan and the other half in North America. Sales in other markets such as Europe should be marginal. The Prius PHV went on sale in Japan in February 2017. A facelifted model is scheduled to appear in 2020. The third generation Prius PHEV will use an update of TNGA-K and should be on the market in 2023.

Toyota, which for so long held out against developing electric cars, is now said to be developing a long-range EV for release in 2020. It would initially be sold in Japan, China, Europe, the US and Canada. The vehicle is question would have a target range of 300km or 186 miles. Its architecture should be TNGA-K.
