Improved reliability and scalability with EMQX enterprise 5.1

With the introduction of our new architecture powered by the Mria cluster architecture, EMQX Enterprise 5.1 brings revolutionary advancements in reliability and scalability. This architecture has been designed to handle billions of concurrent IoT connections, making EMQX Enterprise a highly efficient and reliable MQTT messaging platform.

In EMQX Enterprise 5.1, a single cluster is capable of scaling up to 23 nodes, supporting over 100 million MQTT connections. This represents a significant tenfold increase in access capacity, compared to the previous 4.x version. This enhanced scalability allows businesses to handle larger volumes of data, ensuring smooth operations even in high-demand scenarios.

Apart from improved scalability, our new architecture also ensures higher reliability. The core-replicant node pattern enables the addition or removal of nodes, without causing any disruption to the ongoing operations. The hot-swap nodes provide businesses with the flexibility to scale the number of nodes as per their requirements, without interrupting critical business processes. Additionally, it minimises the risks of node split-brain in large-scale deployments, reducing the chances of nodes going out of sync or processing conflicting data.

The benefits of this new architecture are also seamlessly integrated into EMQX Cloud, our fully managed MQTT Cloud service. The EMQX Kubernetes Operator implements this new architecture, making deployment and scalability more automated and efficient. Whether you are using EMQX Enterprise on-premises or leveraging the EMQX Cloud service, our new architecture ensures optimal performance and seamless scalability for your MQTT messaging needs.

MQTT over QUIC: the next generation of IoT messaging

MQTT over QUIC is the next generation of IoT messaging that combines the reliability of the MQTT protocol with the efficient and flexible transport capabilities of the QUIC protocol. This combination is particularly well-suited for IoT environments with weak network conditions and unstable network paths.

QUIC, developed by Google and adopted as a worldwide standard, is the underlying transport protocol of HTTP/3. It communicates over UDP instead of TCP, providing reduced connection overhead and message latency. This makes it ideal for modern mobile internet applications like IoT and IoV.

EMQX Enterprise is the first product to integrate QUIC with MQTT. Through customer service and technological exploration, EMQX Enterprise has observed that QUIC perfectly addresses the challenges common in IoT environments. By integrating QUIC into the transport layer of MQTT, unique message transmission mechanisms and management methods have been designed.

MQTT over QUIC has been extensively tested and integrated within the EMQX Enterprise user base, receiving positive feedback. EMQ is also actively promoting the standardisation of MQTT over QUIC as a member of OASIS.

This breakthrough solution outperforms TCP/TLS in multiple comparative tests and is especially useful for IoT workflows that require constant mobility, such as connected vehicles or devices with periodic sleep requirements. Customers in the connected vehicle and mobile data collection industries can now take advantage of the latest developments and standardized protocols offered by MQTT over QUIC.

Transferring large files with MQTT

EMQX Enterprise 5.1 introduces a dedicated extension feature for the MQTT-based transfer of large files in IoT applications. This feature allows for offline bulk data transfer of audio, video, and images.

Key features:

  • Utilises existing MQTT connections for seamless integration with client management systems.
  • Allows lightweight clients to transfer large files by breaking them into chunks, overcoming protocol size limits (256MB).
  • Supports pausing file transfers for higher-priority data transmission or resuming transfers after network interruptions.
  • Ensures the integrity of file transfers through employ QoS, verification mechanisms, and retransmission protocols.
  • Offers the option to save uploaded files to a local directory or compatible object storage for future use and easy retrieval.

Use cases:

  • Connected Vehicles: Enables bulk upload of vehicle telemetry data, overcoming network limitations and facilitating batch uploads to cloud platforms or data centers.
  • Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT): Facilitates unified reporting of unstructured production data, including text, images, and videos, from industrial environments to servers or cloud platforms.
  • Smart Cities and CCTV: Efficiently transmits surveillance images and facial recognition files from devices to central servers, allowing for storage, analysis, and integration with higher-level services.

This functionality integrates seamlessly, without modifying existing clients or applications, and offers advantages such as low bandwidth consumption and minimal resource usage. The unified IoT data channel simplifies system architecture and reduces application complexity and maintenance costs.

Accelerate business innovation with bi-directional data integration and rules processing

EMQX Enterprise 5.1 offers advanced data integration capabilities and rules processing to accelerate business innovation. With its rule engine and data bridging functionality, real-time processing of IoT data and seamless integration with third-party data systems, including Kafka, AWS RDS, MongoDB, Oracle, and popular time series databases like TimescaleDB and InfluxDB, is possible.

The new visual Flows page allows users to easily view data processing rules and integrations with third-party systems while the dashboard provides real-time monitoring of data flow. The custom rules engine enables efficient data processing by filtering incoming messages and reducing unnecessary data sent over the network. This is perfect for cloud-to-device scenarios, enabling real-time processing of IoT data using a unified language while supporting continuous large-scale message delivery, opening up new possibilities for IoT business development.

Comprehensive security for IoT messages

EMQX Enterprise 5.1 is a comprehensive solution for enhancing data security in critical industries like transportation, power, oil, and industrial manufacturing. It offers various security mechanisms, such as SSL/TLS for communication security, X.509 device authentication, CRL and OCSP Stapling authentication mechanisms for transport layer security, and built-in client authentication, authorisation, blacklisting, and connection jitter protection at the application layer.

These security features ensure that only legitimate clients can access the system and mitigate potential security risks and abnormal connection behaviour. All these security options can be easily configured through the Dashboard, eliminating the need for code development, and ensuring higher development efficiency and stronger security.

The hot updates and patching capabilities of EMQX Enterprise 5.1 allow real-time fault repairs, without disrupting business operations. This continuous reinforcement of security defences while maintaining business availability lays a solid foundation for a reliable, trusted, secure, and robust IoT system.
