October’s diesel share of regional car sales rebounded from September’s low point with a provisional figure of 10.7%, about the same as was achieved in March and June of this year. Year-on-year decay of the sector returned to the slowing trend seen since Q2 of this year, at 2.5%.

In terms of actual diesel cars sold, the October figure was 100k which was a fall of 22k compared with the October 2024 number. Cumulative sales to October were 1.10 million units, versus 1.37 million for January to October 2024 (a YoY fall of 20%). Only three markets (Austria, Germany and Ireland) have year-to-date diesel shares in excess of 20%, with Germany continuing to prop up the sector from a volume standpoint.

Certain markets, including the UK, are reporting that prices for used diesel cars are very robust as the choice of new diesel cars contracts and supply is limited. Diesels remain popular as towing cars (not a strength of BEVs) while also being seen as long-lasting, affordable to maintain and frugal on fuel. We expect this situation to continue, possible accelerating.

Over time we have seen the rapid demise of small diesel engines with a greater concentration around the 2.0L displacement. Large engine share of sales has increased marginally.
