Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced that it plans to launch sales of the all-new ASX VR-e, a battery electric vehicle (BEV) produced in Taiwan by Hon Hai Precision Industry Company (Hon Hai), in Australia and New Zealand this year.

The Japanese automaker confirmed that the new battery-powered compact SUV will be supplied on an OEM basis by Foxtron Vehicle Technologies Company Ltd, a subsidiary of Hon Hai, as it looks to meet growing demand for BEVs in these two markets, particularly in urban areas.

Mitsubishi said the new ASX VR-e “is positioned as a compelling new option for customers seeking advanced technology, driving performance, and distinctive styling, while delivering strong environmental performance. It carries forward the heritage of the compact SUV ASX (Active Sports Crossover), a long-established name in Australia and New Zealand.”

The automaker said that the ASX VR-e’s design was inspired by the Galant VR-4, Mitsubishi Motors' iconic high-performance sports sedan, with exterior design “emphasizing aerodynamic performance.” The company noted that Mitsubishi engineers “have extensively tested the vehicle on local roads and implemented dedicated suspension tuning to achieve responsive handling with a high level of road-holding performance, delivering a sporty and engaging driving experience.”

Mitsubishi said that under its ‘Mid- to Long-Term Vision’, it aims to strengthen its product lineup with a focus on its off-road vehicle portfolio and ASEAN strategic models. In the area of electrification, the company is leveraging collaboration with Alliance partners for BEVs while concentrating on the development of its proprietary HEV and PHEV technologies. “Through these efforts, Mitsubishi Motors aims to deliver both environmental performance and the distinctive driving characteristics that define the brand. Going forward, Mitsubishi Motors will continue to enhance its product lineup through collaboration with the Alliance and other partners while further accelerating its electrification initiatives,” the company added.
