South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) has agreed to make a KRW 100 billion (US $74 million) equity investment in Posco Future M's synthetic graphite anode materials plant currently under construction in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam.
The two South Korean companies have signed a letter of intent for HMG to acquire an equity stake in the project, which would give the automaker priority purchasing rights to the plant’s synthetic graphite anode materials for use in next-generation electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
The two companies have also agreed to collaborate on early-stage battery materials technology development and quality assessments, to ensure the materials meet the automaker’s EV performance requirements.
Synthetic graphite anodes are becoming important materials for next-generation EV batteries, as they help improve fast-charging and extend battery life.
HMG’s investment would help Posco Future M speed up construction of the US$ 360 billion (US$ 268 million) facility, which began in March 2026, and secure a major customer. For HMG, the investment will help secure a stable supply of critical battery materials. Construction of the plant is scheduled to be completed in 2028.
