Toshiba Electronics Europe has started offering engineering samples of its TB9084FTG, a MOSFET gate driver IC, designed for three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors with power ratings of several hundred watts.

This new component is indicative of the shift by automotive OEMs towards employing BLDC motors for their quieter operation and increased longevity in various applications such as powered doors, tailgates, and adjustable seating.

The TB9084FTG is engineered to support the enhanced power performance of electric pumps and fans, aligning with the industry's move towards more efficient and reliable motor designs.

The device's optimised features include a six-channel gate-driver structure, an additional gate-driver output for reverse polarity protection, and a single-channel operational amplifier for motor current sensing.

It also incorporates SPI communication and an emergency stop function for motors.

The gate driver IC integrates several protection mechanisms, including under-voltage and overvoltage detection, thermal shutdown, and VDS monitoring, to ensure the safety and durability of the motor control system.

Toshiba's new IC is encapsulated in a compact P-VQFN36-0606-0.50 package, which measures 6mm×6mm, allowing for the miniaturisation of automotive equipment.

The TB9084FTG operates within a temperature range of -40 to +150°C and meets the AEC-Q100 (Grade 0) standard for automotive electronics.

The inclusion of a wettable flank structure in the package design aids in automated optical inspection, promoting solder joint reliability.

Toshiba said it is committed to expanding its range of gate driver ICs, tailoring product functions to the evolving demands of the market.

By continuing to launch new products, the company aims to contribute to the electrification and enhanced safety of automotive equipment.
