Yongtu Long has been appointed as a member of Volkswagen’s Sustainability Council set up by the Group Board of Management in autumn last year.

Long is a Chinese political economist and diplomat and has served in many posts, among them chief representative and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation in negotiations for China’s accession to the World Trade Organisation.

“I am delighted the Sustainability Council is welcoming a further top expert to participate in its work,” said VW chief executive, Matthias Müller. “All the more so because Mr. Long comes from China – the country we call our second home market and where our ties are particularly close.”

The Volkswagen Group Sustainability Council was founded in response to the diesel crisis. It advises the company on the topics of sustainable mobility, environmental protection and social responsibility, as well as integrity, the future of work and digitisation.

Members of the Council are drawn from the worlds of research, academia, science and politics. They operate independently, are not bound by directives and have rights in respect of information, consultation and acting on their own initiative.

For the funding of its own projects the Volkswagen Group is making EUR20m (US$23.5m) available to the Council for the first two years.
