Volkswagen AG said Audi CEO Rupert Stadler – arrested by Munich prosecutors on Monday due to fears he might hinder an ongoing investigation into the diesel emissions cheating scandal – had been temporarily released from his duties as a member of the board of management and the supervisory board had accepted his request.
“On Tuesday, the supervisory board of Volkswagen AG accepted the request of [Stadler] to release him from his duties as member of the [VW group management board],” VW said in a statement.
“The release is a temporary measure, put in place until the circumstances surrounding Stadler’s arrest have been clarified.”
Stadler was made chairman of Audi’s management board on 1 January 2007 and was appointed to the VW management board on 1 January 2010.
Abraham Schot, who is to take over as Audi chairman in the interim, will participate in the meetings of the group management board as a guest, VW said.
