Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported sales of 27,132 new cars in the U.S., which represents a 2.4 percent decrease over last year’s October mark of 27,809. The shortfall in sales was due primarily to the strike at the Puebla, Mexico, facility — the site of New Beetle and Jetta production for North America — and product shortages in some key markets.
Volkswagen’s year-to-date sales are well ahead of last year’s brisk pace. Through October, the German automaker has sold 302,017 new cars in the U.S., up 13.0 percent from the same period in 1999 when sales were 267,191.

The Passat enjoyed its best October sales month ever with 6,589 sold, versus last year’s figure of 5,875, an increase of 12.2 percent.
Volkswagen reported 10,394 new Jetta sales during the month. That compares to 1999’s mark of 11,591, a decrease of 10.3 percent.
In October, Volkswagen sold 5,734 New Beetles. This is a 22.4 percent decrease over last year’s sales of 7,390. To date, New Beetle sales of 69,154 are virtually on pace with 1999 year-to-date sales of 69,621.
The Golf model sales were 3,465 for October, an increase of 111.7 percent over 1999’s mark of 1,637.
