Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A has released pictures of the all-new Kentucky-built Camry sedan that has been completely redesigned for 2002.

The new model will also be made in Japan and sold in Europe and Asia-Pacific territories. Like the current model, it will be manufactured in Australia (from 2003) but early reports say the Down Under version will retain the exisiting platform to reduce development costs rather than switching to the all-new underpinnings used elsewhere.

U.S. market four cylinder 2002 Camrys have an all-new twin-cam 16-valve 2.4-litre unit with variable valve timing (VVT-i) which generates 157 horsepower in place of the previous 2.2-litre unit. They also carry over the 192hp four-cam 3.0-litre V6.

A larger wheelbase allows a more spacious cabin with restyled front seats and higher seating positions. The old entry-level CE grade has gone and the base model is a higher specification LE.

Toyota has also introduced a sporty SE grade intended to attract younger buyers previously put off by the Camry’s ‘family car’ image.
