Mercedes and Volvo have launched Apple iPod integration kits for their car lines in the US.

Mercedes-Benz claimed to be the first automaker to allow drivers to use the car audio system to select music tracks using artist, album or playlist via steering wheel controls and the integrated multifunction instrument panel display. The integration kit will debut this April with the redesigned 2006 M-class and become available for most other 2005 and 2006 models later in the year.

It will cost $US299 plus installation at dealerships.

Volvo has announced two iPod connectivity options for its entire 2005 US model line. The adapter for S60, S80 and V70/XC70 models connects by plugging the player into a cable located in the car’s glove compartment (similar to the system developed earlier for BMW and Mini models), while S40, V50 and XC90 models require a dashboard mounted FM transmitter. The adapter allows users to control their music through their vehicle sound system and steering wheel controls, and both options charge the player’s batteries when plugged in.

Pricing has not been announced and installation must be carried out by a Volvo dealer. Volvo’s adapter works with all iPods with a dock connector.
