Delphi Corp.’s newest airbag technology – the dual-depth passenger ‘bag – is now in production on two General Motors‘ models.

The new airbag is standard on the 2006 Cadillac DTS and the 2006 Buick Lucerne, which were launched at the Chicago motor show earlier this month.
The dual-depth airbag is one ‘bag that can deploy in a small or large size based on seat position, seat belt use and crash severity. The ‘bag’s inflation energy is also adjusted at two different pressures according to the crash severity.
The dual-depth airbag represents the next generation of airbag technology because of its potential to help restrain a front-seat passenger in a greater variety of seating and crash situations. A conventional dual-stage airbag inflates to a single shape with different pressures.

Essentially, the Delphi dual-depth airbag system uses common sense to help protect people of all shapes and sizes under a multitude of crash conditions,” said Delphi Electronics & Safety head Jeff Owens.
