Chrysler is to offer a chrome appearance package on its 2003 PT Cruiser.

The company claims the optional package will give the retro-look Cruiser an appearance similar to the Locke Touralette version of the 1927 Imperial and the 1934 Airflow with its chrome “waterfall” grille.

“Chrome is like jewellery. Tastefully applied, it captures attention. Over-applied, it looks gaudy,” said Tom Marinelli, vice president of the Chrysler/Jeep division#;s global brand centre.

“With the chrome accents package, we struck the right balance for the brand and for this unique vehicle.”

The chrome accents package features a body-colour, monotone grille with chrome horizontal bars. This is based on the grille from the PT Cruiser convertible ‘styling study#; (read ‘production-ready concept’) first shown at the 2001 New York Auto Show.

The package also adds a monotone, body-colour front fascia with horizontal chrome bars on the lower opening, a chrome moulding that encircles the vehicle, lower chrome bodyside mouldings, a chrome-plated, billet-look fuel filler door, 16-inch chrome-clad wheels and a bright exhaust tip.

Inside, the package adds brushed silver front door scuff plates engraved with a bright ‘PT Cruiser logo, a chrome shift bezel (for automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles) and chrome shaft gear shift lever with a satin silver shift knob, chrome door lock knobs and handles plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The chrome accents option will be offered on 2003 Touring and Limited Edition models from later this year and, in the US, costs $US1,270 for the Touring and $595 for the Limited.
