Cadillac has released a photo its all-new luxury sport utility model, the SRX, due out mid next year as a 2004 model.

Designed to fill a new slot in the line between luxury sedans and full-size SUVs, the SRX will, Cadillac claims, “offer a unique blend of dynamic performance, flexible utility and bold styling”. The SRX is an all-new entry in the medium luxury utility segment – one of the fastest growing segments.

“The Cadillac SRX is a luxury utility with the heart and soul of a sport sedan. This vehicle will stand out for its head-turning styling and offer a level of performance like no other medium luxury utility on the road,” says Cadillac marketing director Jay Spenchian.

The SRX shares platform architecture shared with the new CTS sedan and will have either a 4.6 litre Northstar V8 or 3.6-litre V6 and the choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

The vehicle has the longest wheelbase in its class, a lower centre of gravity than the SUV norm though overall height is taller than a sedan for a better view of the road. It will also come with Magnetic Ride Control which GM claims is the world’s fastest reacting suspension system.

Manufactured at GM’s new Lansing Grand River factory in Lansing, Michigan, the SRX will seat seven passengers with the optional third row or five with an innovative rear cargo management system and will offer a claimed most second row legroom and the largest and “most innovative” sunroof in its class with power shade – we assume such claims are made with GM’s full knowledge of what the opposition are bringing out in the next year or so.

.

The SRX will also have theatre seating – each row a little higher than the one in front for a better view.
