Toyota has apparently distanced itself from comments made earlier by Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk that future collaboration between the two automakers cannot be ruled out.
Toyota told the Wall Street Journal it has no current or pending collaborations with Tesla and the company’s direction is heading away from electric vehicles and toward fuel cells, a technology that Musk has derided.
An agreement for Tesla to supply batteries and drive systems to Toyota for the electric RAV4 ends this year.
A Toyota statement sent to the WSJ by Julie Hamp, Toyota’s chief US spokeswoman, said: “Our RAV4 EV project with Tesla, to supply 2,400 powertrains over approximately three years, has been mutually beneficial. We currently have no new, or pending projects under discussion.”
