US: Toyota Mirai good for 312 miles on a tank of hydrogen

Toyota's Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has achieved 67 miles per (US) gallon in official federal test combined city/highway driving calculations with an estimated driving range of 312 miles on a single tank – a distance the automaker said was longer than for any other zero emissions car on sale.

Toyota’s Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle has achieved 67 miles per (US) gallon in official federal test combined city/highway driving calculations with an estimated driving range of 312 miles on a single tank – a distance the automaker said was longer than for any other zero emissions car on sale.

Toyota North America CEO, Jim Lentz, announced the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) fuel economy rating for the Mirai at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado this week.

“It confirms that Mirai is the only zero emissions electric vehicle on the market capable of exceeding 300 miles on one fill,” Toyota said.

Lenz said: “Toyota realised in the early 90s that electrification was key to the future of the automobile. Just as Prius introduced hybrid electric vehicles to millions of customers nearly 20 years ago, Mirai is now poised to usher in a new era of efficient, hydrogen transportation.”

Claimed to be the world’s first mass produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, the four-door saloon is said to offer “performance that competes with traditional internal combustion engines”. It runs on electricity created on demand by hydrogen fuel and oxygen and its only emission is water vapour.

Toyota launched the model recently in Japan and California sales start this summer. The car will also reach the UK and some European markets later in 2015.
