General Motors is adding a third shift at its Wentzville plant in Missouri creating around 750 new jobs.

The Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups plus Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-size vans are built at the plant.

The carmaker reported dealers have already placed nearly 30,000 early orders for the new Colorado which goes on sale this autumn.

The 750 third shift positions are on top of the 1,315 new jobs at Wentzville GM announced for the launch of the new pickups and the addition of a third stamping press – two major spends totalling US$513m.

Wentzville Assembly currently employs approximately 2,600 hourly and salaried workers and operates two shifts. The third shift is expected to begin early next year.

Since June 2009, GM has announced US facility investments of more than US$11.2bn, protecting or adding approximately 27,000 jobs.
