US president Barack Obama will convene a meeting of his new task force to oversee auto industry restructuring after Chrysler and General Motors submitted restructuring plans on Tuesday, a White House spokesman has said.

“The president will convene a meeting of the task force on autos later this week – the first meeting of that task force,” spokesman Robert Gibbs told Reuters aboard presidential plane Air Force One.

Obama has travelled outside Washington this week to sign his stimulus plan into law in Colorado and announce help for foreclosure-threatened homeowners in Arizona.

“Treasury is reaching out to, after reviewing those reports, reaching out to the companies themselves for a greater understanding in what they’re doing,” the spokesman added.
