Front end module engineering and production specialist HBPO has opened a new production facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

The 60,000-square-foot plant has the latest assembly line technology and a “robotised” production cell to manufacture large front-end carriers, according to the supplier, which has just started to supply complete in-sequence front-end modules in complex variations for Chrysler in Canada.

HBPO claims its modules are a “breakthrough automotive innovation” and include structural front-body carriers, cross members, engine cooling systems, electronics and accurately positioned headlamps.

The new Canadian facility has created about 100 new jobs in three shifts. Initial production capacity may increase next year, HNPO said.

“Our Windsor, Canada facility is a key-investment in our future and a strategic addition to our current footprint. It will allow us to efficiently serve our customer Chrysler’s needs in North America,” said HBPO North America president Emmanuel Boudon.

This year, HBPO also will open new production facilities in St. Louis, Missouri and Toluca, Mexico.

HBPO was founded in 2004 as a three-party joint-venture between Hella, Behr and Plastic Omnium Auto Exterior to specialise in front-end module engineering, assembly, and supply chain management. It is based in Lippstadt, Germany, with North American headquarters in Troy, Michigan, and had global sales last year of $US716m.

Employing 835 worldwide, HBPO expects to assemble around 2m front-end modules this year in 14 plants in Europe, North America and Asia.
