Lotus will soon halt the sale of its Evora sports car in the US because the model does not comply with the federal requirement to fit smart airbags.

Motor Authority, citing Car and Driver, added that Lotus had earlier stopped selling the Exige and Elise for the same reason.

The Evora remained on sale due to an exemption, now expired so imports from England must cease.

The company is not expected to re-engineer its models to comply with the federal requirement because of a lack of funds.

It recently announced it would terminate over 25% of its global workforce.

Lotus dealers in the US now will sell track-only cars and no street-legal models.
