Hyundai Motor America will pay a US$17.35m fine to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) because it delayed the eventual 2013 recall of 43,500 2009-2012 Genesis sedans.
Most recalled vehicles have now been repaired. In some cars, brake fluid was corroding components, reducing braking performance. Hyundai first issued a technical service bulletin to dealers ordering brake fluid replacement but eventually conducted a safety recall following an NHTSA investigation. The defect did not cause any fatalities or serious injuries, Hyundai said.

“In order to mitigate a situation like this in the future, Hyundai is instituting new organisational and process improvements, and enhancing the ability of the US leadership team to readily respond to regulatory reporting requirements,” said Hyundai president and CEO David Zuchowski in a statement.
