Honda has officially opened its new Silicon Valley R&D facility, using the occasion to unveil a facelifted 2016 Accord with its first application of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The automaker also announced a new open innovation R&D initiative, Xcelerator, which will provide resources to technology innovators to help rapidly develop prototypes with auto potential.

The Silicon Valley operation, established in 2000, is charged with researching and prototyping innovations and using new ideas and technology. Current areas of focus include connected mobility, human-machine interfaces, supporting app developers through initiatives like a developer studio and computer science research for vehicle intelligence. Automaker engineers also work with local technology companies.
