Ford is recalling 850,050 2013-2014 C-Max, Fusion, Escape and Lincoln MKZ vehicles in North America to check the restraints control module.

In the affected vehicles, the restraints control module may experience a short circuit, causing the airbag warning indicator to illuminate. Depending on the location of the short circuit, the deployable restraint systems (airbags, pretensioners, side curtains) may not function in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. The short circuit may also affect the function of other systems that use data from the restraints control module, including stability control. In these cases, the corresponding warning indicator lamps would also illuminate.

The automaker said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. Dealers will replace the restraints control module free of charge.

Affected vehicles include 2013-2014 C-Max vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant from 19 January, 2012 to 21 November, 2013; 2013-2014 Fusion built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant, 3 February, 2012 to 24 August, 2013; 2013-2014 Escape built at Louisville Assembly Plant 5 October, 2011 to 1 November, 2013 and 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ vehicles built at Hermosillo 25 April, 2012 to 30 September, 2013.

Ford said it was aware of 746,842 vehicles in the United States and federalised territories like Puerto Rico, 82,962 in Canada and 20,246 in Mexico.
