The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is expected to release a proposal today that will require Electronic Stability Control (ESC) to be standard equipment on all vehicles sold in the US.
The NHTSA has apparently been keen to legislate in favour of ESC for some time, particularly on SUVs. There was some discussion about ESC following the Ford Explorer tyre failure and rollover problems at the beginning of the decade.
Such legislation would be good news for ESC suppliers, such as Continental.
According to a Continental press release: “Safety belts provide superior protection once a crash occurs — but ESC will help prevent many crashes from happening. There will be a huge social safety dividend once ESC becomes more widespread in the fleet.”
