Coca Cola has ordered 120 new hybrid trucks powered by an Eaton electric drivetrain system.


The deal is the largest North American commercial order to date for Eaton’s hybrid systems and is the second order from the soft drink maker, which purchased 20 trucks with Eaton hybrid power systems in 2007.


Eaton says that extensive testing and evaluations conducted by Coca-Cola Enterprises found that its trucks equipped with the Eaton hybrid-electric drivetrain reduced emissions by roughly 32% and fuel consumption by up to 37% compared to conventionally-powered trucks in its current fleet. Coca-Cola also reported lower maintenance costs for the hybrid trucks.


“We have been working with Coca-Cola Enterprises since 2003 to assess our systems,” said Dimitri Kazarinoff, general manager for emerging technologies at Eaton’s Truck Group.


Eaton said it employs parallel-type, diesel-electric hybrid architecture with its Fuller UltraShift automated transmission. It incorporates an electric motor/generator between the output of an automated clutch and input of the transmission.

The system recovers energy normally lost during braking and stores the energy in batteries.
