According to a report in the Financial Times Volvo AB is considering legal action against European antitrust regulators over their expected approval of a deal between DaimlerChrysler AG and Deutsche Telekom AG to collect German road tolls.

The FT report says the Swedish truckmaker is concerned the joint venture would give DaimlerChrysler a monopoly in the market for high-technology services to transport companies.

Volvo is Europe’s largest producer of fleet management systems used by transport companies to locate and organise their trucks. DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes Benz is one of its main competitors, the report said.

The report said that Stefan Lorentzson, the head of Volvo’s EU representation, said challenging the commission’s clearance of the joint venture in the European Court of Justice is an option, but no final decision had been made.
