SMMT yesterday hosted the second in a series of sourcing seminars for the UK automotive industry. With the focus on the premium and niche sectors, vehicle component suppliers were brought together with representatives from Bentley Motor Cars, Jensen, London Taxis International and MG Rover.
Speaking during the event, Des Kelly, Director Quality for Bentley Motor Cars said, “In our opinion, the UK supply base has the necessary skill to survive, and the top tier of component manufacturers can go on to hold a significant place the world market. What is required of them is a commitment to gain quality accreditation in order to compete effectively”.
The future of the UK’s automotive industry sector has become a controversial subject in recent years. Ford has ceased to make Ford-branded cars in the UK with the cessation of Dagenham assembly of the Fiesta and the commitment of other manufacturers has appeared to waver at times – particularly on the UK/euro question.
A study by AT Kearney last year concluded that the manufacturing of high sales-volume models in the UK will continue to decline in the long term, as a result of the U.K. remaining outside the eurozone, excess capacity and a shift in the centre of gravity of market demand eastward in Europe. It also said that remaining UK suppliers must focus on the premium sector and achieve the quality and technology levels that are a prerequisite of serving those customers.
