Jaguar’s volume take-off has continued this year with a record 40,000 cars sold in the first five months of the year. World-wide sales in the first five months of this year were 80 percent higher than the same period last year when Jaguar sold 22,370 cars.

“This is an outstanding start to the new millennium,” said Jaguar’s Managing Director Jonathan Browning. “During the first five months of the year our sales increased in virtually every one of the sixty plus markets where we sell Jaguar cars.”

Spearheading Jaguar’s sales success is the S-TYPE sports saloon, which was launched in the spring of 1999. By the end of May this year Jaguar had sold 64,157 S-TYPES since the car was first launched. A total of 25,356 S-TYPES have been sold in the first five months of this year.

In the United States – Jaguar’s biggest single market – 18,662 cars were sold during the January / May period, double the number of cars sold by Jaguar in the USA in the same period last year. Jaguar S-TYPES accounted for 11,017 sales.

One of Jaguar’s biggest growth markets is Italy. During the first five months of the year sales increased by 178 percent with 2000 Jaguars being retailed to Italian luxury car buyers. The new S-TYPE sports saloon accounted for 1,675 sales in the January/May period.

In addition to Italy, major sales gains were reported in every Continental European market. Sales in Spain doubled to 1,011 cars, sales in Belgium increased by 180 percent to 917 cars, sales in France doubled to 1,026 cars and sales in Greece increased by 380 percent – from 25 cars sold during the first five months of 1999 to 120 cars sold in the first five months of this year.

Total Continental European sales increased by 87 percent in the first five months of this year – rising from 5,613 cars to 10,513 cars. Outside Europe and North America, Jaguar saw a 90 percent increase in sales – up from 1,546 cars sold last year to 2,922 cars sold this year.

In the United Kingdom, despite competitive marketing conditions, sales increased by 28 percent to 6769 cars during the January/May period. The S-TYPE accounted for 1,993 sales during the period.

Some of Jaguar’s biggest sales gains were in its newer, smaller markets, where the new S-TYPE is making a major impact. Morocco, where just three cars were sold in the first five months of 1999, recorded a 1200 percent increase with 39 sales this year. Sales in Israel increased by 1100 percent from five cars to 61 cars this year.

Jaguar will get an additional boost to volume in 2001 with the introduction of the smaller X400 ‘3-Series fighter’.
