UK car output rose 11.1% to 125,458 units with 106,856 exported, in November. YTD output was up 28.7% to 1,176,147. Total output including commercials was 136,594 (+11.8%) and 1,290,484 (+29.4%) respectively.
KPMG Automotive Associate Partner John Leech said: said: “The UK is expected to produce 1.3m cars in 2010, not that far off the average of 1.5m achieved between 2005-2008. Although you might think that fragile UK consumer confidence and VAT hike to 20% will derail further growth, I am confident that production will in fact be even higher in 2011.”
Citing the success of Mini, Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover exports, he added: “We have been conditioned to assume that UK car production will decline in the years ahead, as manufacturers look to offshore production and UK consumers remain over-indebted and subdued. But the truth is our model line-up now gives confidence that production volumes can grow over the next five years.”
“UK vehicle production has increased in almost every month of 2010 and is driving a manufacturing led recovery,” said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.
“This year vehicle and engine production look set to better 2009 performance by some 300,000 units and while sales in 2011 will be challenging both domestically and in key export markets, SMMT expects modest production growth across the board.”
