The Daily Telegraph newspaper’s latest report on MG Rover said Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, which came close to buying MG Rover before its collapse last month, has offered to save up to 1,500 jobs at the former car manufacturer’s plant in Birmingham.

The development – it would be a British ‘engineering development base – is described by the paper as the most upbeat piece of news for the Midlands car maker since the cash-strapped manufacturer laid off more than 5,400 of its 6,100 workers last month.

One source familiar with the talks told the Daily Telegraph: “They are close to signing a deal which will give them the technology and people who do the R&D.”

The offer will be put to administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers in the next few days, the report added.
