An aid package of almost £100 million is reportedly being prepared for Nissan`s Sunderland plant by the UK Government, according to the Sunday Times (2/7/00).

The newspaper says that the offer is to made at a meeting to be held soon between Nissan`s President Carlos Ghosn and the UK Government, including Prime Minister Tony Blair and Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers.

The announcement of the package comes only days after Ghosn said that the Sunderland plant was under threat due to the pound`s strength against the euro. The UK`s uncertain position on euro membership was also said to be a major factor.
