UK engine output fell 21.8% in August to 97,406 units because the 2014 calendar resulted in some factories losing an additional week to holidays.
Production was down 3.8% to 1,610,756 motors so far in 2014 although export volume grew 4.2% to 1,033,622.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said it expected growth in coming months as new investments in UK engine production facilities take hold.
