Vehicle production in Turkey slumped 59% on last year to 142,567 units in the first quarter as the economic slowdown in Europe reduced demand for exports.
Domestic sales amounted to 100,014 units in the first quarter, 22% down on last year.
However, Istanbul-based TSKB said that there was a big improvement in domestic sales in March reflecting a tax reduction.
In the first three months of 2009, automotive exports fell 56% to 121,478 units with both passenger cars and commercial vehicles exports down sharply on lower overseas demand.
Renault was the biggest vehicle producer in the first quarter, producing 46,563 cars followed by Tofas which produced 42,200 vehicles.
