Toyota Motor Manufacturing Turkey (TMMT) has started exporting Corollas, establishing itself as what head office calls a “strategic manufacturing centre in Europe”.

TMMT, with a capacity of 100,000 cars a year, started as a CKD assembler and began producing Corollas as a TMC subsidiary in 1994. It expects to ship over 40,000 Corolla sedans and station wagons annually to 22 countries, mainly in Europe. Corolla production at TMMT will supplement the hatchbacks built at Toyota#;s UK plant.

At a ceremony at the Adapazari Plant 130km east of Istanbul, TMC executive vice president, overseas operations, Yoshio Ishizaka praised the “hard working spirit” of the Turkish people and said TMC#;s goal was to have TMMT running at full capacity as soon as possible.

Including Turkish market production, TMMT will build only 47,000 vehicles this year.
