Mitsubishi Motors hopes to export around 10,000 Attrage sub-compact passenger cars per year to Mexico from its Thai unit, as part of the OEM agreement with Chrysler reported earlier this week by Japan’s Nikkei and, initially, dismissed as speculation by the Japanese automaker.

Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) has been hit hard this year by the sharp decline in the [light pickup truck-dominated] domestic vehicle market following the withdrawal of the government’s first-time buyer incentive scheme and the political crisis which has had a significant impact on the country’s economy.

The Thai-made Atrrage is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, 78 hp petrol engine.

It is expected to be sold in Mexico with Chrysler Dodge branding under the five-year deal.

There are no plans to include other markets at present.
