General Motors Thailand plans to begin exports of diesel engines to North America from its factory in Rayong.
So far, the Thai subsidiary of the US automaker has made engines only for use in locally produced vehicles.
Starting in the third quarter of 2015, GM Thailand will export 2.8 litre, four cylinder, Duramax diesels to the US and Canada, for fitment in locally produced Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid sized pickup trucks scheduled to go into production in November.
The export contract is expected to help improve economies of scale at GM Thailand’s US$200m engine plant with production capacity of 120,000 units a year.
