Ford is planning a major product blitz in its efforts to grow volume and share in Thailand, according to a report on AutoAsia magazine’s website.

The report says that Ford is planning to beat Toyota in the Thai market within the next five years. By 2006, Ford officials believe that the Thai light vehicle market will be running at a level of 500,000 to 600,000 units – almost twice its current level.

AutoAsia says that Ford’s Thai distributor is planning to introduce a new model each year so that six models will be launched by June 2003; the product onslaught begins with the Explorer and is followed by a revised Laser passenger car. Later this year, the Philippines-built Escape SUV will be launched in Thailand.

Analysts say that the Thai vehicle market could recover to 300,000 units this year.
