Thailand's new vehicle market expanded by 8.5% to 103,164 units in March 2019 from 95,082 units in the same month last year, according to data compiled by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The market in the last two years has been lifted by strong economic activity in the country, with GDP growth at 4.1% in 2018 and 4.0% in 2017, driven mainly by strong domestic consumption.

Recent new model launches have also lifted demand this year with first quarter sales up 11.1% at 263,549 units from 237,093 units a year earlier.

Sales of pickup-based vehicles rose by 7.9% to 52,080 units in March while passenger car sales were 15.2% higher at 40,061 units and SUV sales declined 11.7% to 6,937 units.

Sales of commercial vehicles, excluding pickup-based vehicles, fell by 2.7% to 4,086 units. 

Toyota's sales jumped by over to 27% to 33,899 units last month, according to separate sources, while Isuzu's volume dropped 7.4% to 17,423 units, Honda sold 17,423 units (+8.0%), Mitsubishi Motors 10,042 (+25.4%), Nissan 7,645 (+11.3%), Mazda (-7.7%), and Ford 5,581 (-17.6%).
