New vehicle sales in Taiwan increased by 1% to 35,686 units in May from 35,348 units a year earlier, according to local reports citing company data.
Sales in the first five months of the year were up by 4.1% to 184,305 units compared with 177,059 in the same period of last year.
Toyota, Lexus and Hino distributor Hotai Motor Company reported a 6.5% sales decline to 9,462 units last month, reflecting slowing deliveries of passenger car models such as the Corolla, Vios and Yaris.
Cumulative five-month sales amounted to 51,620 units, for a 28% market share.
Mitsubishi distributor China Motor Corporation reported a 5.4% year-on-year sales decline to 3,658 units last month, resulting in five-month sales of 20,948 units, while Yulon Nissan's sales were down by 13.5% at 2,933 units – reflecting weak demand for the Tiida and Sentra passenger car models.
Honda was the biggest gainer among the major brands last month, with sales rising by over 42% year-on-year to 3,658 units thanks to buoyant demand for the CR-V SUV model.
