Taiwan's new vehicle market expanded by over 13% to 37,241 units in September 2020 from 32,854 units a year earlier, according to local reports citing registration data compiled by Taiwan's Directorate of Highways.

The market last month continued to grow despite this year's 'ghost month' beginning on 19 August, a 30 day period exactly seven months after the Lunar New Year when consumers often refrain from purchasing large items. A rise in deliveries of new models helped lift the overall market in September, after many launches were delayed in the first half of the year, benefiting Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Ford in particular.

The vehicle market in the first nine months of the year expanded by 4.4% to 325,805 units from 312,167 units in the same period of last year, with sales of imported vehicles rising by almost 10% to 160,265 units while domestic sales declined by 0.5% to 165,540 units.

Toyota reported a 5.4% sales rise to 89,170 vehicles year to date, helped by strong demand for the Corolla and RAV4 models, while Yulon Nissan sales fell by 6.5% to 23,601 units, Mercedes-Benz 22,123 (+5.7%), Honda 20,970 (-9.7%), Ford 19,345 (+31.9%) and Mitsubishi 17,871 (+0.5%).
