New vehicle sales on the island of Taiwan fell slightly in August, by 0.2% year-on-year to 22,874 units, according to data released by the automotive industry.

Compared with the previous month, sales were more than 49% lower, as consumers shied away from buying large durable goods during the yearly 'ghost' month – the seventh month of the lunar calendar.

Most manufacturers reported sharp sales declines last month, with Toyota and Honda leading the market lower with sales declines of 59% and 55% respectively.

Luxury brands outperformed last month, with Mercedes-Benz reporting a 20% drop in sales and BMW a decline of just 17%.

In the first eight months of the year, total sales in Taiwan were up by 1.1% at 290,189 units, compared with 287,000 units in the same period of last year. Full-year sales are expected to be just slightly lower at around 420,000 units, compared with 421,000 units in 2015.
