Suzuki has admitted it has found ‘discrepancies’ in its fuel and emissions testing but denies cheating. The admission sent its share price crashing today.
Suzuki Chairman Osamu Suzuki is scheduled to visit Japan’s land ministry later today to report the possible infraction.
In a statement, Suzuki said that “acts of injustice, such as manipulation of fuel efficiency data were not found”. However, it also said that “some discrepancies were found in the automobile emission and fuel efficiency testing process between the regulation by MLIT and the actual method carried out by Suzuki.” The company said it “would like to express our deep apologies to all our customers and stakeholders on this issue”.
Suzuki’s admission of fuel economy and emission testing issues follows Mitsubishi Motors’ fuel data scandal and an internal investigation conducted by Suzuki.
Suzuki says there was no intentional doctoring of data to boost fuel-economy results. Nikkei reported the chairman had told investors no problem had been found when he talked them at the time of the company’s earnings announcement on May 10.
Suzuki said that some 16 models – domestic sale only – are under investigation. Unlike Mitsubishi, the models are not confined to (kei-class) minicars.
