Subaru is recalling 395,000 vehicles sold in Japan following the safety inspection scandal that emerged last month.

Subaru, along with Nissan, was one of the Japanese automakers found to have used unqualified staff to carry out final vehicle inspections at its domestic assembly plants over many years. ]

Nissan has already begun to recall around 1.2m vehicles sold in Japan in order to carry out new vehicle inspections.

The Subaru recall is much larger than the 255,000 vehicles initially estimated last month, with the company deciding to recall all vehicles sold in Japan since the beginning of 2014.

Vehicles sold prior to 2014 would already been subject to compulsory three year roadworthiness inspections.

The recall involves nine models, including one manufactured for Toyota, produced at the company's two assembly plants near Tokyo.
