Hankook Tire has announced plans for its eighth global manufacturing plant – in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Hankook spend over US$800m on the new plant, its first in the US. The local plant will provide additional capacity for the tyre maker’s growing business and create approximately 1800 full-time jobs for the region which is about 50 miles northwest of Nashville.
Hankook is expected to break ground on the new plant by the end of 2014 and begin tyre production by 2016.
“This new facility will help Hankook Tire accomplish our plan to establish a production base in all major markets,” said vice chairman and CEO Seung Hwa. “We will be able to provide our customers, consumers and carmakers with high quality tyres and industry leading service to meet the demands of the American market.”
Hankook said Clarksville was an ideal location, offering an extensive transportation network including rail, plane and interstate highway networks as well as regional access to the Mississippi River inland waterway. It is also close to the existing Hankook distribution centre, also in Tennessee.
