BorgWarner is opening a new plant in Korea to produce up to a million turbochargers over the next five years for Asian car manufacturers. Up to 130 new jobs will be created by 2012.
The new plant will be operated by BorgWarner’s joint venture partner, SeohanWarner Turbo Systems. It will be located in Pyongtaek and cover 4,800 square metres.
In a statement BorgWarner said that spark ignition engines without a turbocharger will be inconceivable in the future, and this is behind the growth in demand for turbochargers in Asia.
The plant will also comprise engine and turbocharger test rigs of a turbocharger supplier in Korea. The test rigs are scheduled to be fully operational by the beginning of 2008.
The Korean investment follows a recent announcement to invest EUR 85m in new plants in Poland and Mexico, as well as a development centre in China. The planned factory in Rzeszov, Poland, will initially have an annual capacity of 500,000 turbochargers.
