MG and Rover cars will be available in South Africa before Easter next year, say
local news reports (19/12/00).
Citing an insider close to the organisation, these reports say that the first
two cars have already arrived for homologation testing and that the official
launch of the MG and Rover brands will take place in the second week of April.
Tthe Rover 75 four-door saloon and the MGF VVC open sports car are to be introduced
first in South Africa.
The company has also reassessed original sales estimates and now expects to
sell 800 cars in the first year, the majority Rovers.
Dealers will be appointed mainly in metropolitan areas – to give a more ‘personal’
touch for customers – although it is has not yet been decided how the SA
importation company will be structured.
The former managing director of Land Rover South Africa, Piet Rademeyer, is
believed to hold the MG Rover franchise.
