A spokesman for the National Union of Metal Workers (Numsa), Dumsa Ntuli, said that the workers had downed tools quickly while the company had urgently sought a court order to stop workers from participating in industrial action.
Ntuli added that the dispute had been sparked of by an alleged
agreement reached between the union and Nissan South Africa in 2000, whereby the company was to give an additional 12 million rand ($US1.12 million) from its share of the surplus to employees’ funds.
The money would enable the union to provide better benefits for retired or laid-off workers.
Ntuli said that shop stewards and management at the Nissan plant would continue negotiating to resolve the dispute.
