GM’s new plant in St Petersburg has commenced series production of cars.
The plant is building the GM Daewoo-designed Opel Antara and Chevrolet Captiva SUVs and, from late 2009, the new Chevrolet Cruze compact sedan (also a GM-DAT product) will be added. The flexible plant can accommodate a variety of different models., as well as the Chevrolet Cruze sedan.
GM opened the plant on November 7, 2008 in the city’s Shushary industrial area, and the plant operated in test mode before this week.
The capacity of the plant amounts to 70,000 vehicles a year.
Before this week, GM assembled cars in St Petersburg at the Arsenal plant. GM will close production at this facility.
