Sales of imported vehicles in Romania doubled in the first 10 months of 2000 compared
to the same period last year, writes Xinhua News Service (8/12/00).

The official Romanian news agency Rompes said on Thursday (7/12/00) that 11,304
imported cars were sold in the Romanian market to the end of October. This compares
to 5,071 sales in the first 10 months of 1999.

The article says that domestic auto-makers sold 52,690 cars -over one-third
less than the corresponding period last year — when 80,390 cars were sold.

However, 6,581 cars were exported, a fivefold increase over the same period
for 1999.
